2010 Fly Tying Classes
Beginners Fly Tying Course, 11 January 2010
Registration for Texas FlyFishers 2010 annual fly tying course will begin at 6:30 pm on January 11, 2010 at Bethany Christian Church, located at 3223 Westheimer, between Buffalo Speedway and Kirby. The church is directly across the street east of Lamar High School. The first class will begin at 7:00 pm that evening. The registration fee will be $50.00. We take cash, checks, or Credit Cards.
This is a ten week course, meeting for two hours every Monday night from 7:00-9:00 pm at the church. We will start the course with a review of the tools and some of the materials used by the fly tier. The second class will be on Entomology, or the “bugs” we imitate with our flies. Then we start tying for the following 8 weeks.
If you do not have tools, the club has tool kits that we “loan” upon payment of a $25.00 refundable deposit. In fact, we prefer that you not have your own tools, as the course will help you make wise decisions with respect to what to buy. These kits are yours to take home during the course.
We will again be offering materials kits that will have everything in the way of hooks, threads, feathers, furs, etc., that you will need to tie all of the patterns tied during the course. At this point in time, I have no idea what the price will be, but I am hoping they will be $150.00, or less, each. I do know that they will be more than the $100.00 we have charged in the past. As always, they will be sold at our cost. We have resisted any increase, but inflation has caught up with us. I can assure you that you will not be able to put the same kit together for much less, if any, than $200.00 if you attempt to do so.
Seating for the course is limited to 24. To reserve your place at a table, or for more information, contact Frank Schlicht at 281-392-5296, or: email@example.com. Ladies and children from 8 years old up are definitely welcome. Some of our best students in years past have been the ladies and the youngsters.
The Beginners Course is designed to first teach you how to work with the various materials that our flies a tied from, beginning with the humble, but highly productive, wooly worm. Basics such as thread control and tension, body part proportion, the "pinch" technique, etc. will be stressed. You will be taught how to tie dry flies, streamers, wet flies, nymphs, beadheads and basic saltwater patterns.
Looking forward to seeing you at the class - Frank Schlicht.
Intermediate Fly Tying Course
The Beginners Course will be immediately followed by a ten week Intermediate Course. Details to be posted soon.
Like the Beginners Course, enrollment is limited to 24, on a first come-first served basis.
