A little friendly competition on Saturday the 17th of January. The rules of the contest are simple. You fish with one fly and one fly only (not one pattern). The same fly may be retied on your leader but you may not change to another fly even of the same pattern. Total up the inches of all trout caught on that one fly. He who catches the most inches of trout is the winner. "Of course you are on the honor system, but then honor and the Texas Flyfishers are synonymous" said Clarke, the last time he coordinated this event. You may fish any area of the river that you have legal access to, either float or wade.
Your safety is paramount, so make sure that you ask questions before the outing if you are undertaking an activity for the first time. It is your responsiblity to ensure that you have the right gear and are physically prepared to safely participate in the outing. You should always check the flow on the river to ensure that you are comfortable and safe wading.
We will meet in the parking lot of the "Super S" food store on Sattler Road in Sattler (just off Hwy 2673) at 7.30 to review the plan and kick off the day. At 16.00 sharp we will meet at Gruene Hall to review the results. The trophy will be presented at the next monthly meeting. Gruene Hall is located at 1281 Gruene Rd., New Braunfels Historical District, 78130 and their phone number is 830.606.1281.
Your access to the river is limited. You have three choices: free public access negotiated by TPWD, pay at one of the private camps or outfitters along the river, or the lease access program through GRTU. TPWD has secured two access points free to the public. Free access is provided at the tailrace area just below Canyon Dam. In addition, free access will be available for trout anglers at Camp Huaco Springs from December 7, 2007 through February 10, 2008. TPWD has a map of access points on their website. Other privately owned camps charge access fees. Places like Whitewater Sports, Rio Raft, and Action Angler provide parking and access for a fee. Call in advance to make sure you understand the costs. Details of the GRTU Lease Access program can be found at Guadalupe River Trout Unlimited a>.
